What Error 19x Means
Error 19x appears when your W&H Lisa's door gasket (the rubber seal around the chamber door) isn't sealing properly. This could be because the gasket is dirty or has buildup, worn out after heavy use (400-cycle or 800-cycle replacement due), damaged or compressed, or the door face is dirty.
A bad gasket = steam leaks. Steam leaks mean your chamber doesn't reach proper temperature and pressure, so your instruments may not be fully sterile.
⚠️ Important: This is one of the most preventable errors in your sterilizer. With simple weekly cleaning, you can avoid it almost completely.
Quick Fix: Clean Your Gasket Now (5 Minutes)
In most cases, Error 19x is fixed by cleaning. Try this first:
- Turn off the sterilizer and wait for the chamber to cool (15-20 minutes)
- Open the door fully
- Locate the door gasket—it's the rubber ring around the inside edge of the door
- Inspect it for visible dirt, mineral deposits, or food residue
- Dampen a soft lint-free cloth with warm distilled water
- Gently wipe the gasket in a circular motion—don't scrub hard
- Also wipe the chamber face side (the metal edge where the gasket contacts the chamber)
- Dry both surfaces with a clean cloth
- Close the door and restart your sterilizer
💡 Pro Tip: If you see stubborn mineral buildup, dampen the cloth with a 50/50 mix of distilled water and white vinegar. Wipe gently—don't soak. Rinse thoroughly with distilled water after.
When to Replace Your Gasket (Maintenance Schedule)
Door gaskets wear out over time. Your VA131 sterilizer tells you when replacement is due at 400 cycles with a "Door gasket replacement due" alert, and at 800 cycles with a second replacement alert. Replace anytime you see visible cracks, hardening, or permanent compression.
How to Replace Your Door Gasket
Option 1: DIY Replacement (15 Minutes) - Turn off the sterilizer and cool the chamber. Open the door fully. Locate the gasket groove. Gently pry out the old gasket using a soft plastic tool (not metal). Clean the gasket groove thoroughly with a damp cloth. Dry the groove completely. Insert the new gasket into the groove, pressing gently all the way around. Close the door—it should feel snug but not overly tight. Run a test cycle (empty) to confirm proper sealing.
Option 2: Service Replacement (Professional) - DIA can handle the replacement during your scheduled maintenance visit. We'll inspect the door frame and gasket groove too.
Prevent Error 19x: Weekly Gasket Maintenance
After your last cycle of the day, allow the chamber to cool. Open the door and visually inspect the gasket for dirt or buildup. Wipe the gasket and door face with a damp lint-free cloth. Dry thoroughly.
Signs Your Gasket Needs Replacement
Don't wait for the 400-cycle alert. Watch for visible cracks or tears in the rubber, hard or brittle feeling (lost flexibility), permanent compression marks that don't bounce back, discoloration or black spots (mold growth), or steam leaking from around the door during cycles.
If you see any of these, don't wait for the 400-cycle alert—order a replacement gasket now.
